The worms are independent organisms, but when combined, their intelligence is combined to create incredibly powerful combat units (though there are many other configurations that can be made, the Mgalekgolo is the configuration we see in the games).

They seem pretty unstoppable. Maybe they got sick of humans boarding them and taking them over so they just turned them into Lekgolo-controlled mega tanks that couldn't be captured and turned against them. Additionally, since Hunters see themselves as superior, they will not hesitate to kill any lesser Covenant soldiers unfortunate enough to get between them and their foe.

If they're actually this powerful without the massive suits then why would the ever wear those big suits that just slow them down? The Forerunners cataloged the Lekgolo in their time, albeit in considerably different assemblages than the ones that would be encountered later on.
